Pre-requisites

There are no pre-requisites for the French language course.

Lecture topics

The French language course for beginners deals with the following topics:

  • Basic grammatical principles (verbs) and pronunciation
  • Basic social phrases (greetings, polite expressions and meeting people)
  • Basic daily activities, moments (numbers, time, days, months)  and weather
  • Basic daily life situations (shops and shopping, restaurants and medical situations)
  • Basics about French habits

Course contents

The French language course aims at introducing the French language (for beginning students) or practicing the French language (for intermediate level students) according to the level of the student.

Core reading

During the French language course, students work online and with documents given by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able:

  • To understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs
  • To introduce themselves and others
  • To interact in a simple way: Ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live,the people they know, the things they have and how they feel.

Organisation

The French language course is organised in two separate sessions:

• An intensive course of six sessions of three hours each from Monday 4 to Friday 8 September 2017. On 1 September 2017, students are evaluated on their knowledge of French language and their ability to learn French language. This evaluation is compulsory.
• An extensive course of one session of three hours each on Friday afternoon, from 29 September to 17 November 2017. This course also starts with a compulsory evaluation, on 22 September 2017.

Both courses are organized in small groups of students with a similar foreknowledge of French language and ability to learn French language. Students can opt for attending only one course, but they can also attend both.

Assessment

The students are evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the French language course. An exam is organized on Friday 25 November 2016, with a resit option on Friday 9 December 2016.
